[[File:0dabfc2ac5daf976678561441ae33185.jpg|thumb|300px|A Washburn wm24v, featuring a phenolic fretboard.]] Phenolic is an experimental material used for fretboard. It is in many respects very close to [http://guitar.wikia.com/wiki/Ebony ebony] if not better. It is a thin composite plastic and is very smooth with good tonal qualities. It is black in colour. Because phenolic is a strong man made material, it reduces the speed at which a neck will warp on a guitar; phenolic also can not be stained, and is more resistant to damage than other common woods. However should phenolic be damaged, it is highly unlikely a luthier will be capable of repairing such a material, as it is rarely found on guitars despite it's excellent qualities as a fretboard material.
