I don't think it is true that guitar amplifiers were used clean before the 1960's, Listen to rock and roll or blues records from the 1950s. You hear a lot of overdrive, distortion and fuzz on some of those records. Back then there were no overdrive or fuzz pedals, and amps were not designed for overdrive or fuzz, but by playing the amps real loud, or by modifying or deliberately damaging them, the early rockers achieved some cool distorted sounds. Not as extreme as what Hendrix and Clapton did in the 1960s, but still. Overdrive, distortion and fuzz were used and recorded in the 1950s, and probably even before that.
